This Week in 1969: Crosby, Stills & Nash Debuts

This week in 1969, Crosby, Stills & Nash released their debut self-titled album Crosby, Stills & Nash, most commonly known as the Couch Album among the band and fans.

The album was an incredibly powerful beginning for the supergroup, instantly lifting them to fame and initiating a change in popular music due to their incorporation of folk, blues, jazz and harmonies. The album features some of their most well-known songs including 'Helplessly Hoping', 'Long Time Gone', 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' and 'Wooden Ships', to name but a few.

The album cover also comes with an interesting story attached. Originally planned as a publicity shoot with Henry Diltz, the entire band immediately fell in love with one of the photographs but shortly realised that the band was sitting out of order with their newly decided name. The story is told in the band's own words in CSN&Y: Love the One You're With.

'We went back to reshoot the photograph but, amazingly, the house was gone! Bulldozed, it was now just a pile of rubble! We then made the decision to use Henry's shot that we all loved for the cover.' - Graham Nash

'To this day I think; 'Hey, man, I would have paid 100,000 bucks for that house.' It could be a museum now.' - Henry Diltz

Introduced by Graham Nash and Stephen Stills, CSN&Y: Love the One You're With is a celebration of the supergroup and its individual members - David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young - documented through 835 photographs and 58,000 words from 20 contributors.

With the Deluxe copies selling out in a matter of days, the Collector copies are also selling fast. There is limited time available to secure your copy of Henry Diltz's remarkable CSN&Y archive, due to be shipped in August 2023. Find out more at CSNYBook.com
