The Who at Wembley

Genesis Publications had the pleasure of seeing The Who as they made a huge homecoming appearance at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Having last played at the venue in 1985 for Live Aid, they brought their show 'Moving On!' to the capital for an impressive concert combining new material with Who classics.

Original band members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were backed by Zak Starkey on drums, who has performed with The Who since 1996, and a full orchestra. As well as debuting a new song, 'Hero Ground Zero', they teamed up with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam for the Quadrophoenia track, 'The Punk and The Godfather'.

The band paused to pay tribute to the passing of Pete Townshend's guitar technician, Alan Rogan, during the show. Alan was also a good friend to Genesis Publications, contributing to Genesis editions including Live in Japan (1993) and Concert for George (2004), and we send our condolences to his family.

The night's setlist included 'Who Are You', 'Behind Blue Eyes' and 'Pinball Wizard', but the concert also gave centre stage to some of The Who's new songs, giving fans a taste of their forthcoming studio album. They closed with 'Baba O'Riley.'

In a show that is sure to have meant as much to the fans as it did to the group, Daltrey told the crowd towards the end of their show 'our glamour is gone, our youth is gone, but the music still sounds fucking brilliant.'
