The Night Janis Took the Stage

This week marks sixty years since Janis Joplin made her debut with Big Brother and the Holding Company at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom.

Just days earlier, she had arrived in San Francisco and auditioned for the band. Bassist Peter Albin later recalled:

"Her voice was so powerful it would cut through a rock... Right away we knew she was the one. We said to her, 'We're working next weekend, hope you're ready.'"

On 10 June 1966, Janis stepped onto the stage for the first time as a member of Big Brother and the Holding Company. The audience had little idea they were witnessing the emergence of one of the defining voices of her generation.

In a letter home written shortly afterwards, Janis described San Francisco as "the most thrilling place in the whole U.S.A." Looking back years later, she would summarise what followed in two simple words:

"I exploded."

To commemorate the extraordinary week that changed the course of her life, Genesis Publications presents the final 60 copies of Janis Joplin: Days & Summers.

Created in collaboration with the Estate of Janis Joplin, the large-format signed edition reproduces Janis's personal scrapbook alongside previously unpublished letters, photographs, artwork and memorabilia from her archive, documenting her remarkable rise from local clubs to international stardom.

Each 60th Anniversary Copy includes:

• A signed and numbered copy of Janis Joplin: Days & Summers
• Signatures from Laura Joplin, Michael Joplin, Peter Albin, Dave Getz and Jorma Kaukonen
• A rare 7-inch vinyl single featuring recordings from The Typewriter Tape
• An exclusive giclée portrait of Janis Joplin drawn and signed by Grace Slick, suitable for framing

Presented as the final chapter in the Days & Summers story, these are the final 60 copies that will ever be produced.

Once allocated, Janis Joplin: Days & Summers will be permanently sold out.
