This week in 2004, Traffic was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, honouring their contributions to psychedelic and progressive rock. They were inducted by musician Dave Matthews, who praised their innovative sound and lasting influence.
Dave Matthews: 'It was an honour to induct Traffic into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I grew up listening to Jim Capaldi and he was certainly what pushed me towards a life in music.'
Formed in 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason, Traffic emerged from the British rock scene with a genre-blending mix of jazz, rock, and psychedelia. From early hits like 'Paper Sun' to the innovative brilliance of 'The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys', their music has had a lasting impact on future generations of songwriters and musicians.
Paul Weller: 'I was a big Traffic fan as a kid. I would have been nine when I first heard their singles. I came in at the end of it all, but I just loved all those records. I still do. They're magical.'
The band's induction ceremony brought together surviving members Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Dave Mason, with Stephanie Wood representing her late brother, Chris Wood. The night featured a star-studded performance of 'Feelin’ Alright', with Mason joined by Keith Richards, Tom Petty, and The Temptations, making for an unforgettable tribute to Traffic’s enduring legacy.
Tom Petty: 'As you read Jim Capaldi's lyrics, ask yourself if anyone in rock ever wrote better. The pirate poet indeed. Jim was a real rough diamond... I loved him.'
