VINYL CONTENTS REVEALED

We are also excited to announce the contents of the exclusive 7" vinyl included with each copy of Words of Love, as described by a leading Buddy Holly expert involved in the recent engineering of these rare recordings:

  • A side - 'Word of Love' Demo

This rare recording was made in the Norman Petty Studios, Clovis, New Mexico, on 12th March 1957. The purpose of the 'demo' was to help Buddy decide what he would double-track and overdub when the final master recording was made. In the process he obviously played and sang along with this disc many times, thus the 'acetate' record became quite worn. Generally such recordings are easily damaged and were only intended for limited use. The disc remained in the Holley home and was again played many times, to fans and family members, as a curiosity. We have done our best to improve the sound to create this single but some surface noise remains. The results are released here for the first time.

  • B side - 'Words of Love' Remix

When Buddy and The Crickets returned to Clovis on 9th April 1957 to record the master version, they recorded a basic track of vocal, rhythm guitar and drums.  Buddy then added a second vocal and a lead guitar by overdubbing (playing and singing along with the first recording on one machine while being recorded and mixed onto a second tape-recorder). Thus, Buddy has been credited with creating 'double-tracking'... But it is likely he had heard similar recordings by Les Paul and Mary Ford which Les had made within his own studio on the first two machines to be manufactured by Ampex. It seems Buddy's initial recording that day was discarded, so we have done our best to de-mix and re-create how the first recording would have sounded.

As you can probably tell, an enormous amount of care has gone into the restoration and technical production of the Words of Love recordings, and we are excited to present the results exclusively for Genesis subscribers.
