The Photograph Portfolio 2013

Ringo Starr

The Photograph Portfolio 2013 offered collectors the first ever chance to obtain Ringo Starr's photographs in a series of museum-quality prints. A few copies remain. Created in small editions of only 25 numbered copies, each print is signed by Ringo Starr as a mark of authenticity.

Taking you on a journey from his first car in Liverpool, to stunning landscape compositions shot as Ringo toured the world with the biggest band in history, in these photos Ringo shares his own unique viewpoint. Intimate portraits of The Beatles capture sides of John, George and Paul that only a bandmate would see.

'These are shots that no one else could have. I just had the camera with me a lot of the time.' Ringo Starr

1. Liverpool

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

c.1960

'As a drummer, not having a car was pretty difficult. When I had to come on the bus, I had to beg drummers in the other bands, "Let me play your drums." Sometimes they'd let me and sometimes they wouldn't. Later on, when I got my car, other drummers would beg me, "Let me use your kit, man!" and I'd say, "Sure," because I knew what begging for a kit was all about.' Ringo Starr

3. John and Paul

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

1964

'John and Paul would write the songs at the beginning, then George started, and then I joined in. I remember ending up in the studio for hours and hours in the end. It was good, but I was the first person ever to put a back on a drum stool, so that I could just lean back a little. There was a lot of hanging-out time and I always wanted to be by the kit, ready if anyone got inspired.' Ringo Starr

Florida, 1964

'We were on a boat in Florida. Somebody lent us their motor launch and we went out. They let me drive and I came in to port straight on! I didn't swing it sideways, and I broke the rail. But, if you were a Beatle, you could break the rails on anybody's boat in those days.' Ringo Starr

6. Paul

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

Paris, 1964

7. Old Hickory

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

USA, 1964

'When we were on the train from New York to Washington, the Press told us why we got such a great reception in America. They said, "Ah, we came to kill you, but you gave as good as you got and we love that." I walked to the back of the train and shot out of the back window. I like shots like this. It's very architectural.' Ringo Starr

8. Ringo and Paul

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

1964

'Paul and me. Timer shots are always weird because you don't know when it's going to go. When you're in hotels, you just look for things to do and have a bit of fun. The Beatles only ever had two rooms in a hotel; we'd always share. That's when you really get to know each other, when you're hanging out in the same room.' Ringo Starr

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

1964

'John had this weird way of sitting. The knee could go down to the floor and the leg right up to his shoulder! John and his fabulous loose hips. It's far out, isn't it? I can't do it. All you people reading this out there - can you do it?' Ringo Starr

The Photograph Portfolio 2013

1966

'I love this shot of John and George listening to a tape. Look at the size of the damn thing! It's a little player and they've plugged it into a radio. It wasn't all great sound in those days; you just got the best that you could.' Ringo Starr
