Ziggy's Black Plaque
Bowie fan and Spandau star Gary Kemp unveiled acommemorative Ziggy Stardust Plaque on Heddon Street yesterday, 27
thMarch. The beautiful sunny day provided a stark contrast to the dark and dingystreets in which Ziggy landed 40 years ago.
'I think that what made Ziggy so potent at the time was thatit was coming out of a London that was much darker. It was much moreimpoverished and it wascertainly not as glamorous as it looks now. I think, as a working class kid,Ziggy offered an escape from the every day. It was quite grand and exciting andcertainly outraged my parents.'
- Gary Kemp
Two of the Spiders from Mars, Trevor Bolder and MickWoodmansey, were present at the event, and a tribute was made to the late MickRonson, hailed by Gary Kemp as the best guitarist in rock. David Bowie wasunable to attend because, as Gary Kemp said, 'He'd like to come and meet us buthe thinks he'd blow our minds'. To read more about the plaque
