Tom Morello has collaborated with the activist group, Pussy Riot, in a new protest song, 'Weather Strike'. It comes after the release of 'Stand Up', another protest anthem on which Tom Morello features, along with Dan Reynolds and Shea Diamond.
'Pussy Riot is one of the most radical and important activist musical groups of all time.' - Tom Morello
The song, which looks to an alternative future, features the recognisable heavy riffs from Tom Morello, set to Russian and English vocals from Pussy Riot. For Pussy Riot's Nadya Tolokonnikova, it was an important moment working with someone whose values ran parallel to their own.
'Both for Tom and me, politics have been always closely intertwined with our music, like two sides of a Möbius strip. It's an honor to collaborate and be friends with Tom. I feel strong, empowered, supported, seen, respected, when I work with Tom, I feel that we're forming a good part of a revolutionary art army together, true allies and comrades.' - Nadya Tolokonnikova
From performing naked on stage with Rage Against the Machine to protest censorship, to playing and participating at rallies, Tom Morello has always been a political musician. And as he explains in his photo memoir, Whatever It Takes, music can be an important vehicle to drive a political message.
'I've always strived to lend my time and my songs to fight for a more just and decent planet. In turn, those struggles have provided tremendous inspiration through the years.' - Tom Morello
