RIP Baron Wolman

© Photo: Baron Wolman

Baron Wolman, the celebrated photographer, sadly passed away this week at the age of 83. As Rolling Stone Magazine's first staff photographer, he took some of the earliest, and most iconic, rock'n'roll images of musical legends such as Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, Grace Slick, Jeff Beck, the Grateful Dead and The Who amongst many others. In later life Wolman started a lifestyle magazine, became an aviation photographer (and learnt to fly) and started his own publishing house. In 2011 Wolman published an auto-biographical photographic book, Baron Wolman: Every Picture Tells A Story, the Rolling Stone Years and in the same year received the VIP award at the 2011 Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards.

At Genesis we were proud to have collaborated with Baron Wolman on our limited editions, Classic Hendrix, in which many of his superb shots of Jimi Hendrix were included, and also Sojourner, a book of photography by fellow photographer, Ross Halfin, for which he wrote the foreword.

In one of his lasts posts of Facebook, Wolman wrote: "Sad to say I'm now in the final sprint to the end. I go forward with a huge amount of gratitude for the many blessings bestowed upon me (family, friends, travels and more), with no regrets and appreciation for how my photographs - my life's work - have been received."
