Remembering Adam Cooper
Adam Cooper, filmmaker, editor, Genesis author and son of celebrated photographer Michael Cooper, sadly passed away yesterday (4 October).
After the death of his father, Adam was raised by his grandparents in Hampshire and later lived in Kingston-upon-Thames alongside his wife and daughter. They later moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina in the late-1980s. While there, Adam founded The South Atlantic Film Company and worked on a number of films and campaigns.
Before Michael Cooper passed away in 1973, he conceived the idea for Blinds & Shutters. Adam later worked with Genesis to produce a book that was true to his father's vision, published to worldwide acclaim in 1990. On the 30th anniversary of the publication, in 2020, Adam collaborated again with Genesis on the release of the final copies in the edition.
"I received [the Michael Cooper archive] in a tatty old cardboard box with no protection for the negatives. There was a lot of paperwork and I came across a note he'd written explaining the concept of Blinds & Shutters and how he wanted to be. I followed his ideas to the letter... A love of photography has been my life ever since. I think it's embedded in me, and it all came from Michael. I've worked on 42 feature films now - and goodness knows how many commercials, documentaries and music videos - but the most important thing is that I really love it." - Adam Cooper, interviewed in 2020
