Mike McCartney Reveals His Favourite Photograph to The Guardian

In an interview with The Guardian, Mike McCartney has reflected on one of his most loved photographs in detail. The photo, which features in his forthcoming publication Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool, captures The Beatles backstage at the Tower Ballroom shortly after one of their shows. It was taken at a time when the band were supporting musicians that they had grown up listening to such as Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

'Those gigs were extraordinary, absolute magic.' - Mike McCartney

Mike explains that while there are often discussions around the band's differences and disagreements, the great thing about this photo is that it shows them as they were; as friends, messing around.

'The most important thing this photograph communicates is joy. It's all about the fun, the camaraderie.'  - Mike McCartney

Mike McCartney's new limited edition provides a unique insight into 1960s Liverpool, capturing the first colour photograph of John, Paul and George together, as well as the wider, thriving Merseybeat scene.  'David Puttnam once wrote in a foreword to one of my books: "What I like about Mike's photos is that he captures a period in time." [...] That's why my new book, Early Liverpool, is important, because it tells you what life was like back then. Not just the Beatles, but all the other artistic sides of Liverpool - comedy, poetry, pop art. The whole place was bouncing.'
