Today marks the 82nd birthday of Genesis author, artist and musician Klaus Voormann. The the co-author of Hamburg Days and a contributor to From Hamburg to Hollywood, he is connected to many of our current authors. Klaus played bass with Yoko Ono in the Plastic Ono band, arranged one of the songs on Ringo Starr's first album, Sentimental Journey, which had its 50th anniversary last week (see the news item here), and also collaborated with Yusuf / Cat Stevens, whose Genesis book Cat Stevens, 1970-'71 was announced last week. He is a man whose talents reach far and wide.
The artist, musician and record producer is perhaps most known for his artwork on the Beatles' album Revolver and The Beatles Anthology. However, during his career as an artist, Voormann produced many pieces of iconic artwork, commissioned for album covers, posters, and books for numerous bands, including the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Liam Gallagher and more.
Voormann met the Beatles during their residency in Hamburg, and became friends with the group. It was a trip that changed the Beatles' career forever and created many wonderful memories for Voormann. In Hamburg Days, Voormann illustrates these memories through hundreds of original sketches and paintings. The two-volume boxed set tells the story of the Beatles' time in Hamburg via the previously unpublished photographs of Astrid Kirchherr, and drawings and specially commissioned oil paintings by Klaus Voormann. In his afterword, Sir Paul McCartney reflects on the Voormann's artwork in the book:
'Klaus was part of a group of The Beatles' friends in Hamburg. Now he has made some 'memory drawings' of our Hamburg days which are not only beautiful drawings in themselves, but which capture the spirit of the times' - Paul McCartney
We wish you all the very best Klaus, and hope you have a wonderful day.
